Educational exhibition along bunker route - VVV Ameland

Educational exhibition along bunker route

During the celebration of 80 years of liberation on Ameland, an educational exhibition can be visited.

Memorial panels have been set up along the cycle path from Sier aan Zee to the Bunkermuseum in Hollum. Together, these panels form a photographic timeline depicting the events on Ameland during the Second World War.

The exhibition focuses specifically on the long wait for liberation. While the Netherlands was liberated on 5 May 1945, the liberation of Ameland did not follow until 3 June 1945.

Route information

The route starts atop the dune at Sier aan Zee, near the small car park. From there you walk or cycle along the cycle path to the Bunkermuseum. Along the way you will pass several exhibition panels that provide insight into the war years and the liberation of Ameland.

  • The route is suitable for walking and cycling.
  • Free access during the entire exhibition period.

Temporary exhibition at the Maritime Centre

In addition to the outdoor exhibition, a temporary exhibition can be viewed at the Maritime Centre in Hollum. Here, the historical events surrounding 80 years of freedom are further highlighted. Stories and objects bring the past to life.

Artworks by pupils from Amelander primary schools are also on display at the Maritime Centre. Each school has painted or otherwise adapted two helmets from World War II into a work of art.

From 1 May to 1 July 2025, Ameland will mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation from German occupation. During this period, numerous activities will take place on the island under the theme of celebration én reflection.

The activities within the framework of ‘80 years of liberation Ameland’ have come about through a cooperation between the four village interests, the Bunkermuseum (STAM), amateur historians, Municipality of Ameland and other parties involved, including Stichting Wolf, Amelander choirs and music societies, with support from VVV Ameland.
