The panels give an impression of daily life on Ameland during the Second World War. The combination of images and text makes the history visible in an accessible way for anyone visiting the island.
From May 2025, commemorative panels depicting life during the occupation will be on display in the four villages of Ameland. The panels show historical photos’s of the island, combined with short, multilingual texts that tell the stories behind the images.
The commemorative panels will remain visible for two months to both Amelanders and guests. They serve as a visual reminder of a time when freedom was not a given.

On each panel is a QR code that allows visitors to discover additional stories. The QR codes also direct visitors to other activities taking place around 80 years of freedom.
A total of 25 photo panels have been placed at various locations in the villages. An overview of all the locations can be found on the information panel at the jetty in Nes, where visitors arrive on the island.
Tip: Take a look at the information panels about the Second World War and combine it with the special cycling route past historical memorial sites. All locations are easily accessible on foot or by bike.
From 1 May to 1 July 2025, Ameland will mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation from German occupation. During this period, numerous activities will take place on the island under the theme of celebration én reflection.
The activities within the framework of ‘80 years of liberation Ameland’ have come about through a cooperation between the four village interests, the Bunkermuseum (STAM), amateur historians, Municipality of Ameland and other parties involved, including Stichting Wolf, Amelander choirs and music societies, with support from VVV Ameland.
