There are many musea on Ameland. Culture, history, maritime and a lighthouse. There is something for everybody.
An impressive appearance on the island is the lighthouse, built in 1880 of cast iron and 55 metres high. Since 2005, the lighthouse isn't used by the coast guard and isn't manned anymore. (there are camera's now to keep an eye on the shore).
In the Nature centre visitors spectacularly meet nature and Ameland's fascinating natural processes.

Cultural-historical museum Sorgdrager
When you live isolated on an island for centuries, like the people from Ameland, a culture in its own right develops. What that means and how the people from Ameland have lived together through the ages, you can discover in and around the Cultural Historical museum "Sorgdrager".
Agriculture-Beachcomber museum Swartwoude
It seems romantic, but in fact it was a struggle for existence; the life of farmers on the Ameland of the past. Most Ameland farmers used to combine farming with fishing, hunting, and beachcombing. That's why the exposition in the museum consists of two parts: agriculture and beach combing.
Corn- and mustard mill De Verwachting
Rack mill 'De Verwachting' is on the place where the old corn mill 'De Verwachting' used to be from 1840 til 1949. The rack mill was rebuilt in 1988.
Corn mill De Phenix
Corn mill De “Phenix” is an old grain and peel mill that still works perfectly, thanks to a thorough renovation. The mill is located on a place where they already grinded in 1629. The mill actually dates back to 1880. The name already shows: the mill was built after its predecessor was struck by lightning during heavy thunderstorm and fully burned out.
Around 1913 in all four villages of Wadden island Ameland small fire hose houses appeared. These small houses served as a depot for fire hoses. The 'brandspuithuuske' (little fire hose house) in Nes has been preserved all these years. It is now a monument and fully restored and decorated authentically. The house is freely accessible.
