Liberation exhibition and painted helmets - VVV Ameland

Liberation exhibition and painted helmets

From 1 May 2025, the Abraham Fock Maritime Centre in Hollum will host an educational exhibition focusing on events on Ameland during the Second World War, with a special focus on the liberation.

Special objects and personal stories bring to life the island's history during the war years. Attention is also paid to D-day: the largest amphibious invasion in history on 6 June 1944 in Normandyë, which marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe.

Painted helmets

Pupils from the highest groups of Amelander primary schools have actively participated in the exhibition. Per school, two helmets from the Second World War were painted or otherwise provided with a work of art in the context of 80 years of liberation. The helmets and the stories behind them form an important part of the exhibition and can be seen in the Maritime Centre in Hollum during this period.

Exterior panels

The exhibition is complemented by a number of outdoor panels along the cycle path to the Bunkermuseum. These panels offer additional information about Ameland's wartime history and complete the exhibition.
