Whether you are visiting Ameland for the first time or return here every year: the lighthouse continues to attract. Over and over again.

With his red and white striped body, he proudly stands above the dunes of Hollum. You can see him from afar, but believe us, the real view is only experienced when you are at the top.

Visit the tower, even when it is raining

236 steps. That sounds like a climb, and it is. But above, a view awaits you that you will not soon forget. Dunes, beach, village, and mudflats; on clear days, you can see for kilometers. And even in rain or mist, it is special: the clouds around the tower, the rustling of the wind, and the soft light make it especially atmospheric.

You can climb the tower on your own during opening hours. On each floor, you will encounter something: from old equipment to photos and stories about the history of this beacon of steel.

A few facts for those who love details:

The tower was built in 1880 and designed by Quirinus Harder.
It consists of 16 cast iron rings and is 55 meters tall.
The lighthouse of Ameland has no name and is simply called "lighthouse".
Until 2005 it was used as an official sea beacon.
Now it is a national monument and open to the public.
