Cycle tour along memories of the Second World War - VVV Ameland

Cycling tour along memories from World War II

During World War II, the Germans built several bunker emplacements on Ameland.

Some of these are still clearly visible in the landscape, others are hidden under the sand and vegetation. This special cycle tour will take you past tangible and less visible traces of the war, leaving you to reflect on the island's past along the way.

Bunker museum

The bike tour starts at the Bunkermuseum Ameland in Hollum. Here you get an immediate first impression of the network of bunkers constructed during the war years. The route is about 25 kilometres long and takes you past various locations that remind you of the occupation years: from simple sand walls and wooden fortifications to concrete bunkers that have stood the test of time.

On your own

The tour can be cycled on your own. From May, you can pick up a free route leaflet at the Amelander Museums or VVV Ameland. In the folder you will find the complete route description and extra information about the places you will encounter along the way.

From 1 May to 1 July 2025, Ameland will mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation from German occupation. During this period, numerous activities will take place on the island under the theme of celebration én reflection.

The activities within the framework of ‘80 years of liberation Ameland’ have come about through a cooperation between the four village interests, the Bunkermuseum (STAM), amateur historians, Municipality of Ameland and other parties involved, including Stichting Wolf, Amelander choirs and music societies, with support from VVV Ameland.
