What do the Corona measures mean for Ameland?

The following information is valid as of September 18, 2020.


  • Ameland is reachable. Ameland is part of the Dutch province of Friesland and is therefore not considered a risk area. On the ferry extra measures apply. Wearing a non-medical mouth mask is mandatory for people aged 13 years and older. For details and timetable please refer to the Wagenborg website.
  • If you want to take a car with you to Ameland, reservations for the boat crossing to Ameland are required. This applies to the outbound and return journeys. A reservation can be made on the Wagenborg website.
  • Without a car to Ameland? Then reservations are not possible. However, it is recommended that you purchase a ticket online to reduce crowding at the terminal counter. More information you can read here. Online tickets can be purchased on the Wagenborg website.
  • The buses on Ameland run according to the summer timetable. Wearing a non-medical mouth mask is mandatory for people aged 13 years and older. You can travel with OV chip card or with an e-ticket. It is also possible to buy a ticket from the bus driver which must be paid by pin.  
  • Taxis and coaches are allowed to ride with the maximum number of passengers. Wearing a mouth mask is mandatory.
  • Car drivers are allowed to travel with people from other households. There is no mouth mask obligation, but it is advised to wear a mouth mask. There is no upper limit for how many people are allowed in a car.

VVV reservations and information

  • Do you have questions regarding your reservation from VVV Ameland? Please contact us preferably by e-mail (info@vvvameland.nl) and include your name and reservation number.
  • Cancellations will be processed according to the Terms and Conditions.
  • The VVV Tourist office and the library location in Nes are open between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and between 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Measures are taken to ensure the 1.5 meter distance regulation can be met and a door policy is in place.
  • The ING service point in the VVV building in Nes is not manned and therefore only open for the withdrawal and deposit of cash from Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • The VVV location, the library and the PostNL package point in Hollum are open between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m.
  • An activity programme leaflet for the coming weeks will be published, this programme can be picked up at VVV Nes and VVV Hollum. The programme is also available online

Entertainment and activities

  • Restaurants and restaurant patios are open. Customers must be seated during their stay and keep a social distance of al least 1.5 meter. There is no visitor maximum. A maximum of 2 people who are not from the same household may be seated at one table. If you are from the same household, there is no limit to the number of people per table. 
  • Reservations are madatory. On arrival you will be asked questions about your health. Also your details will be noted, which would be used for contact enquiry where necessary.
  • Clubs and discos remain closed.
  • Toilet, wash, and shower areas on camp grounds and in yacht harbours are open.
  • Events and gatherings are allowed, there is no limit to the number of visitors as long as everyone keeps 1.5 meter distance and reservations are made in advance. If reservations cannot be made, a maximum number applies: 100 visitors inside, 250 visitors outside.
  • Shops and vacation parks take measures to ensure keeping 1.5 meter distance is possible. In shops for example by means of a door policy.
  • Outdoors you can get together with as many people as you want, there is no maximum number. However, keep 1.5 meter distance and avoid busy places.
  • When visiting indoors, there is also no maximum number, but a distance of 1.5 meters should be maintained. However, this is not maintained unless it causes a disturbance.
  • Through an emergency decree, mayors have been empowered to carry out interventions.
  • All the museums on the island are open.
  • The lighthouse is open, to visit the lighthouse you need to book in advance.
  • In public, you need to keep a minimum distance of 1,5 meter to others. If not, you could risk a fine.

Medical service

  • GPs do not have regular consulting hours. Please call them if you have any health concerns.
